Support My Journey
From April 1 to 18th 2018 I will be joining 26 others as part of True Patriots Love expedition to the Himalayas. Our physical goal, or as they would say militarily, our mission, is to trek to the base camp of Mount Everest and then ascend to the 20,000 foot peak Lobuche East which sits next to Mount Everest in Nepal. Though this will be very physically challenging, our principal and financial mission is to raise $1 million to fund mental health and Veterans transition programs across Canada.
In June 2014, my son Scott and myself had the unique opportunity to join True Patriot Love on a historical visit to the sacred European battlefields of the First and Second World Wars to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the landing by allied forces on the beaches of Normandy. It is my expectation that this expedition to the Himalayas will be no less memorable.
Our expedition will consist of our team captain, Scott Kress , acclaimed documentary film maker Ben Webster, Sherpa mountaineering guides,9 veterans with visible and invisible illnesses and injuries and 18 civilians. As well, to mark the 65th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary's iconic first ascent of Mount Everest, Peter Hillary, Sir Edmund's son and two time Everest conqueror will help guide our trek to Everest base camp. This will give our expedition a rare and privileged access into the Sherpa culture and Hillary legacy.
As part of our team building experience, each disabled veteran will be paired with two civilians which are to act as mentors for the veteran as they continue their lifelong rehabilitation from their injuries and transition from military service to civilian life. This mentorship / partnership is to last a minimum of one year. Experience from previous True Patriot Love expeditions has shown that they often last much longer.
Though I will be considered a mentor to my paired veteran, it is my expectation that I will learn much more than I can possible give. To quote Timothy Hodgson, Managing Partner, Alignvest Management Corporation and True Patriot Love Co-Chair for the North Pole, Antarctica and first Himalayas expedition, " I have learned more from our veterans on these expeditions about bravery, patriotism, service and a commitment to leaving no one behind than from any activity I have undertaken. Our vets are truly inspirational."
Support My Journey: Together, We can Support Stronger Military Families
It is with great excitement, apprehension and humility that I decided to take on this huge challenge.Excitement because trekking to the base camp of Mount Everest has always been a dream of mine. Apprehension because I know what the physical, mental and emotional demands will be and the inherent dangers that accompany such a trip. Humility because I know that I am very fortunate to have an opportunity to do such an ambitious adventure but realize that I cannot do this alone. I need your help.
As part of my pledge to True Patriot Love, to be a member of Himalaya 2018 expedition, I have committed, as each of my civilian teammates have, to raise $50,000 charitable dollars. I realize that this is a significant financial obligation but I believe it matches the scope of the physical challenge involved.
This is very personal quest on my part but I can only accomplish it with your help. $50,000 is a lot of money to raise and reaching out and asking for financial support is always an awkward moment but I do feel that the work that True Patriot Love does for our Veterans and their families is extraordinary. Any contribution that you feel appropriate would be greatly appreciated.
I think it is also important to note that none of the donated funds will go to cover any of my travel or participation cost.
